About us

The Design Collective Architects are a national Award Winning company working to produce innovative and award-winning design.

TDC was formed in 2016 by long-time colleagues Chris Shearman and Richard Bailey, who combined have over 25 years experience across a variety of sectors including commercial, residential, health care, restoration and international as well as a specialising in the care sector.

Chris Shearman (Managing Director) has over 16 years of experience in healthcare design and has won 3 prestigious Pinder’s Healthcare Design Awards.  Chris’ main experience and skill set has been in designing care homes and care villages for the elderly and frail, and those with limited mobility.  The size and scale of the developments Chris has worked on vary from a one- off bedroom extension to a 2000 bed care home in China.  Chris is also a talented designer in other fields and was nominated for a RIBA Bronze medal in 2004 for a one-off house in the New Forest.  Chris has worked on many other commercial schemes from key motor retail sites for Ferrari and Porsche to high-end commercial office space, national retailers and one-off housing.  To date, Chris has also been involved in over 200 developments throughout the UK and overseas.

Richard Bailey (Director) qualified as an architect in 2014, and has experience of designing and constructing care homes since 2007.  Richard's keen eye for detail and appreciation of the specialist environment that are required for the residents brings a level of understanding second to none.  Richard was the lead architect on Bupa’s flagship care home in Farnham (Winner of a Pinder’s Design Award for “Best Care Home”) before joining with Chris Shearman and forming The Design Collective Architects. Richard also has experience of high quality, small-scale projects, having worked upon a number of prestigious private developments, home remodelling and restoration projects.

TDC Architects established an office in Melbourne, Australia in 2019 as part of an expansion which would make use of international time-zones and allow collaborative working around the clock.

The design studio in Melbourne CBD is based within The Commons QV, a co-working space for creative and innovative companies. The mix of different disciplines under one roof creates a fresh and vibrant community where new ideas are shared and business relationships can be developed at the regular networking events. The facilities at The Commons QV are state of the art and include a Kitchen & Bar area, Music Lounge and Golf Simulator room.

The TDC team in Melbourne work closely with their UK counterparts to co-ordinate working across all different phases of projects from feasibility studies to planning, technical design and construction drawings.

Working between the British and Australian time zones allows for a 24-hour office which can be extremely beneficial when working to tight deadlines!
